3 Minute Huddle - Why I’m Leaving: An Open Letter to My Boss and Mentor - Part 2

**PSA: These letters are not shared with a suggestion that they should be sent, more a therapeutic reflection for both parties to recognise the emotional impact these transitions can have. Perspective is important and when communication is respectful and considered I truly believe staff exists can be not only amicable, but positive.

My hope is that these letters can be used as a precursor for open discussion and honest conversations.

Thanks for reading… I see you.

Dear [Boss’s Name],

This letter is very difficult to write, and I know it won’t be easy to read. Stepping away from a business where I’ve grown and contributed so much comes with a lot of mixed feelings. I’ve put a lot of thought into this, and I want to approach this conversation with the respect it deserves.

First, I want to acknowledge everything you’ve done for me. Working here has been a defining part of my career, and I’ve gained experiences and insights that I’ll carry with me wherever I go. You’ve been a mentor and a leader, and I’m grateful for the guidance and support you’ve given me along the way. My decision to leave isn’t a reflection of anything lacking here, but more about where I feel I need to go next in my journey.

I know that my departure brings its challenges for you and the team, and I don’t take that lightly. I understand the impact that losing a team member can have on both the business and the culture we’ve built together. But I also hope you can see that this is a step I need to take, just as you’ve taken steps in your own career to reach where you are today.

What I hope you take from this is that everything I’ve learned here has made me better, more capable, and more prepared for the next chapter. I wouldn’t be where I am without the opportunities I’ve had here, and I appreciate that more than words can express.

I also want you to know that this decision wasn’t easy. I’ve thought a lot about the relationships, the clients, and the trust we’ve built. But for me, this is about growth and pursuing a new challenge. It’s something I feel I have to do, not out of dissatisfaction, but out of the same drive that brought me here in the first place.

I understand if this feels like a loss, and I don’t expect you’ll welcome this news. But I hope that in time, we can both reflect on this transition with a sense of mutual respect and pride for what we’ve accomplished together. As I move forward, I’ll carry with me the lessons, values, and principles that this business and your leadership have instilled in me. I intend to work with you to make this transition as smooth as possible.

Thank you for everything, truly.
