Boredom Burnout On The Rise
Burnout has had many evolutions since the pandemic and we are on the precipice of another.
Most people think burnout is caused by long hours or the grind of client care. But let’s be real — burnout isn’t because of overwork. It’s from under-challenge. It’s the Tedious Nominal Tasks (TNT, I call them) that pile up and slowly and blow up your passion for the job. It’s also coupled with ambition recession and lack of drive.
These Tedious Nominal Tasks: TNT are the repetitive, soul-sucking, engagement-draining tasks that weigh you down. The more TNT you have, the less you love what you do. The less you love it, the less motivated you are. And before you know it, you’re overwhelmed, bored, and burned out — not because you’re too busy, but because you’re too stuck in the cycle of doing the things you hate.
Sound familiar?
The Problem: Boredom Burnout
Here’s the truth no one talks about — burnout isn’t just about doing too much; it’s about doing too much of the wrong stuff. The TNT steals your time, your energy, and your focus from the things you actually love about your work: seeing clients, connecting with your team, growing your skills, and making an impact.
We get caught in this cycle because we think:
- “I’ll just do it myself. It’s quicker.”
- “No one else will do it the way I like.”
- “I can’t afford to outsource right now.”
And so, the TNT piles up. Over time, it creates what I’ve coined Boredom Burnout — a slow drain of joy, engagement, and purpose. The worst part? It’s sneaky. You don’t notice it until you’ve started to resent the very thing you used to love.
The Solution: Leadership Development + Delegation of Authority
Here’s where we flip the script. The key isn’t shared responsibility (because let’s face it, no one wants to share the biting tasks—they’ll just boomerang right back to you). It’s about delegation of authority.
Delegation isn’t just handing off tasks—it’s handing over trust and NOT TAKING IT BACK!
It’s about finding a team that can truly take ownership of the TNT without you needing to micromanage or constantly oversee their work. It’s about empowering others so you can reclaim your time for the work that lights you up.
But what if you have a small team?
Outsource sooner.
Stop waiting until you’re drowning in TNT. Lean on your team, hire a VA, free yourself up to focus on the things you love before you start to hate what you do.
When you delegate effectively (either internally or externally), you can create space for:
- Creative problem-solving.
- Leadership and mentorship.
- Professional growth.
- Actually enjoying your career again.
Why Leadership Matters
Boredom burnout is on the rise and isn’t going away. Every business, every profession, every role has tasks we don’t love. The difference between thriving and burning out is how you lead yourself and your team through it.
Leadership development is the ultimate investment. It’s not just about running a team; it’s about creating systems and structures where everyone can play to their strengths — including you. It’s about building a workplace where the TNT is divided, delegated, and handled without crushing anyone’s spirit.
When you invest in leadership:
- You create more capacity in your team.
- You foster trust and collaboration.
- You reduce burnout—boredom and otherwise.
- You get back to doing the things that matter.
Burnout isn’t inevitable—but it is preventable.
